James A. Long

Senior Associate

James A. Long is a Senior Associate at M&K's Syracuse, New York office.  Mr. Long's practice is focused on civil litigation involving products liability (e.g. pharmaceutical and medical devices, as well as asbestos), emerging technologies (e.g. drone torts), cybersecurity and data breach, general liability, professional liability and complex commercial matters. He also counsels individuals and businesses interested in applying for an FAA part 333 exemption and gaining permission from the Federal Aviation Administration to operate a commercial drone. He has represented clients ranging in size from Fortune 500 companies to individuals on a pro bono basis.

With a background in technology and an unrelenting focus on client satisfaction, Mr. Long works to understand the legal and business issues in each case to serve the client’s needs in a cost-effective manner. Mr. Long earned his Juris Doctor from the New York University School of Law and received his bachelor's degree from The City College of New York where he majored in political science.

Prior to the practice of law, Mr. Long was a programmer and entrepreneur in the technology industry.  From 1999 until 2007, he worked on the cutting edge of internet technology, first as a coder on a variety of complex business applications and later as a co-owner of an internet technology consulting firm.  Mr. Long leverages his technological expertise to represent clients and insureds involved in data breach cases, cases involving drone technology, and other torts arising from the use of emerging technologies.

Mr. Long is a member of the Unmanned Autonomous Vehicle System Association, the world's largest professional association for the advancement of aerial robotic technology.

Mr. Long recently published an article in the January 2014 Issue of DRI's The Whisper, The Newsletter of the Young Lawyers Committee, entitled "Introduction to Using Data Aggregation in your Litigation Practice" which explores ways to use data to assist in the analysis and development of cases.
