William D. Sanders, Esq. has substantial experience representing Life Sciences clients in litigation matters.
DES litigation—Bill represents a major worldwide pharmaceutical firm in the breast cancer class action case pending in the District of Massachusetts.
Medical Devices--Bill represents a manufacturer of dermatological lasers in commercial and products liability cases, and also represents a manufacturer of subtalar (podiatric) implants in products liability litigation.
Food Products—Bill represents a major California food producer in litigation arising out of the December 2006 e. coli. outbreak.
Chemical Exposure—Bill represented a home repair products maker in a 175 plaintiff MDL.
In general, Bill specializes in complex mass tort, products liability, professional liability, insurance coverage and personal injury defense. He has substantial experience in the asbestos litigation, having represented both Fortune 100 companies and mining companies as defendants. He also has experience representing clients in professional liability, personal injury, insurance coverage, consumer protection and securities arbitration matters. He is also a member of the firm's pharmaceutical and life sciences defense practice. He has successfully represented plaintiffs in professional liability and consumer fraud matters where he has recovered triple damages and attorney's fees.
Bill’s published opinions include Grubbs v. Knoll, 376 N.J. Super 420 (App. Div. 2005) where he successfully obtained triple damages and over $575,000 in attorneys fees and expenses. Mr. Sanders also participated in Strasenburgh v. Straubmuller, 146 N.J. 527 (1996), which established important corporate law principles, and the Philippines v. Westinghouse litigation, which yielded over a half-dozen published opinions concerning significant substantive and federal procedural principles. Bill also served on the insurers' team prosecuting the declaratory judgment action concerning the $60,000,000 property insurance claim of the owners of the Essex House Hotel following its renovation in the early 1990s. Bill has participated in several major defense committees in insurance litigation, including the $900,000,000 claim of the New Jersey Attorney General against the members of the former Joint Underwriting Association.
Billl served as Legal Assistant to Director Robert D. Lipscher, the Director of New Jersey's Administrative Office of the Courts, and was a law clerk to Hon. Herbert S. Alterman, J.S.C. in Passaic County. Mr. Sanders was a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court's District V-B Ethics Committee from 1997 to 2001, where he successfully prosecuted Matter of Sidney S. Kanter, 162 N.J. 118 (1999). Bill was also a founding member of the Justice Wm. J. Brennan, Jr. Inn of Court, and a Master of the Inn from 1995 to 2003. Bill has been a frequent lecturer for the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education, and has created, moderated, and participated in seminars such as "Taking the Pledge: How to Conduct a Civil Practice," "Civil Motion Practice," "Post-Trial Issues," "Personal Injury Law:Tips for a Better Practice," and "Confidentiality and Its Limitations." He has also lectured for Lorman Educational Services concerning "Litigation Ethics" and "Purchasing Law: UCC Sec. 2-207."
Bill is a member of the Bars New Jersey and New York, the U.S. Supreme Court, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, as well as all the U.S. District Courts in New York. He is a graduate of Rutgers School of Law-Newark and Brown University. Mr. Sanders is concentrating his efforts on the defense of pharmaceutical, chemical and asbestos exposure matters, as well as on insurance coverage claims from our Florham Park, New Jersey office.
